This is a fantastically simple and completely yummy pasta dish I serendipitously developed the other night when faced with nothing but 2 tomatoes, pasta and some pork for the evening meal. As usual it’s not ‘what’ but ‘how’ that makes it special.

A wicker fence

While I have been thoroughly underwhelmed by many things Ukraine has to offer this particular technique of fencing has caught my attention. Not only is it visually appealing but it also makes environmental sense. This style of wicker fencing can be used small or full size fences, even wind breaks. Given availability of suitable materials it also costs nothing but well rewarded time and effort.

Playground duty

Pechersk Playground

Looks kind of serene doesn’t it? I can assure you however that the conditions that produced this idyllic sight were not. Yesterday afternoon I found myself on playground duty for an hour, in the snow, below zero temperatures. It was actually pretty fun however; football, snowballs and a hot cuppa. I guess you just have to learn how to live with a chilly face when you’re having fun after school.

Yorkshire Tea

Over the October break two wonderful people requestioned me wholly satisfying amounts of my favourite tea for which I’m very grateful. There is just something entirely satisfying about a stodgy cup of British tea, and nothing delivers that sensation better than Taylors of Harrogate Yorkshire Tea. The moral boosting shipment could not have come sooner, my last bag had been carefully rationed over 3 months and was beginning to appear more finite than ever.

Big Digger

It seems every time a level piece of bitumen appears some giant soviet robot crawls out of the darkness to tear it up. I know all this construction must seem like the hallmarks of progress yet I see none. I wonder if they offer joy rides in these kinds of machines somewhere in Kiev?
