Thailand - Land of Dreams

Room with a view

We’re in Thailand! For months we have been using the thought of a week’s holiday in Thailand as a way of dealing with the stress of our departure from friends and family in Australia, however now that we are here we find ourselves fairly unprepared for it.

To begin with, it only occurred to us on route that Thailand would be hot and wet this time of year. As we exited the airport terminal were hit by a tsunami of humidity and air pollution. Experiencing the air in Bangkok could be compared to sitting in a sauna after consuming one too many red curries the previous night, accompanied by an idling bus.

Despite our lack of mental preparation our travel plans have come together suspiciously well. We called our hotel and were promptly greeting by a chauffeured black Volvo who whisked us to the nearby hotel with great haste. The hotel was clean and well organised, Lauren was even able to get a full body massage for an hour before we finally bedded down around 2am. Tuesday started with a cooked breakfast of sausage omelette, toast, tea and coffee before the black Volvo returned us with equal haste to the domestic branch of the Bangkok airport from which we’d been picked up the night before. The whole experience only cost us barely more than $50.

We took a Thai Air Asia flight at 10:45 to Chiang Mai which was miraculously punctual, and were pleased to see, as we approached Chiang Mai an hour later, that air was much cleaner in the North and that the countryside was lush, mountainous and green. Rudy Rudresh was waiting to meet us at the airport and took us back to their house, and their neighbours where we decided to stay.
