Chiang Mai Paradise
The name of a delicious yoghurt smoothie, “paradise” is not the term I would use to describe Chiang Mai, but Chiang Mai is a lot of fun for tourists. The people here are really friendly, there is stacks to do and the food is delicious and cheap. Lauren and I have been enjoying roaring, sometimes putt-putting, in and out of the City in all manner of taxi. The took-tooks are a hoot.
Thursday was spent wandering through the Wararot Markets, noting all manner of animal, vegetable and mineral by-products for sale, but the significant event was the much anticipated visit to the tailor. We were fortunate (hopefully) to talk with a number of locals and visitors all of whom recommended we visit the government owned tailor, Vien Ping, over the cheaper, more shady Indian tailors. We talked with the tailors and picked out a number of outfits each, they measured us and, after some wrangling over price and payment terms, we headed off to meet Rudy and Lara.
I know I’m labouring the point but, the food here is so good and so cheap. Rudy and Lara took us to visit the night bazaar. By this time the sun was going down and we were exhausted, but once again Chiang Mai came through and delivered more fantastic food at very silly prices. I acquired a delicious Tom Yam Seafood dish for only $2 and it was by far better than any I’d had in Australia, I couldn’t even finish it. Lauren enjoyed a spinach curry with freshly cooked nan bread, one of her favourites. After dinner the girls went shopping for necklaces while Rudy I bemoaned our collective fate.
