Retro Metro

Its fast, dirt cheap and can withstand thermonuclear attack; its the Kiev Metro. The Metro is the amazing soviet era subway system that runs underneath central Kiev. Five cents buys a trip to anywhere on this amazing public transport system. Of course, to reach the train you must descend to a depth that can withstand an atomic blast, and to do this you need some seriously long, steep escalators. Amazingly, the one pictured above is not the longest. Photography is forbidden.

Deep, deep underground. Here you can catch a train, provided you have deciphered the minimalist signage that various completely from station to station. Conveniently the only maps are located within the trains. No photographs please.

The approaching trains create such a rush of air that you know your train is coming before you hear or see it. Often the merciless swinging doors upstairs will get buffeted back and forward by the train movements far below. Photography is also not permitted; guess the secret is out now.

I love checking out the subways of various cities. I think I would like to get some funds together to do a coffee table book of photos from undergrounds around the world.

that’s insanely deep - moreso than some young love-stricken teenager who used to write songs about Rome burning…

Talking of deep, someone should dig a hole and bury them, or post them on Internet.
