A Short Walk Through Sultanahmet

Sultanahmet street

We have been spending our week staying in the historic center of, an otherwise sprawling, Istanbul called Sultanahmet. In addition to the amazing mosques, ancient relics and the history that just seems to ooze out of every corner of a district that has served as the capital of no less than 4 empires, Sultanahmet has some charming back streets. Here are just a few photos from my wander around the neighbourhood this afternoon.

A shop selling Turkish wares

When they’re not selling kebabs or electrical components you will often find small boutiques selling beautifully detailed carpets, bags, pillows and so forth.

Sultanahmet houses

Some how even the more grotesque concrete apartments just disappear into background.

A Sultanahmet backstreet

The echoes off the cobbled streets and the smell of wood smoke adds a certain ambiance that I cannot, unfortunately, communicate through images.
